'I have always depended on the kindness of strangers...'

This is the story of the emotionally charged confrontation between two - now iconic - characters: Blanche Dubois and Stanley Kowalski. She is a disinherited Southern belle from a once aristocratic family striving to keep her head above the horrors that life has delivered her. He is the brutal and passionate husband of Stella, Blanche's younger sister.

Blanche arrives at the Kowalski's home, disrupting Stanley and Stella's sexual intimacy. Stanley is quickly irritated by Blanche's airs and graces. He becomes violently determined to pull her down from her pedestal and get to the savage truth behind her arrival in their home.

Presented through special arrangement with The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.

Advisory: PG/12A - some steamy themes.

All Quiet on the Western Front,  E M Remarque novel dramatised,   , <./p>

 ,  Edinburgh Kings Theatre,  0131 529 6000,  Friday 31 October 2008,  07:30 p.m.,  06:30 p.m., <./p>

Notes:,

Based upon the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque.

Paul Baumer is a butterfly collector - a dreamer abruptly cast into one of the greatest nightmares in history. That he endures at all is down to the deep bonds of comradeship forged in the trenches. Just as the brimstone butterfly thrives in the field of battle, somehow the men keep one another's spirits alive even amid the horrors of the Great War.

Erich Maria Remarque's novel is a universal anthem to the strength of the human spirit. Directed by Giles Croft, Robin Kingsland's faithful and theatrically inventive new adaptation brings the soul of a soldier to the stage.

Into the fashionable world of London parties, politics and diplomacy comes the worldly and devious Mrs Cheveley. She attempts to blackmail the British Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Sir Robert Chiltern, whom she accuses of building a career on dishonour by selling a cabinet secret.

Written with the wit and style expected of Wilde, the political intrigue amongst society's highest ranking figures gives us one of the most entertaining plays in the English language.

Notes:,

A tightly wound, slickly plotted and hugely enjoyable screwball spy comedy that couldn't be in bigger contrast to the Coens' last film, the bloodsoaked, brooding No Country for Old Men.

Set in Washington DC, at the heart of America's political establishment, it moves in four directions at the same time. Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) is a superannuated CIA analyst who is given the push and rancorously starts writing his memoirs. A computer disc containing his background material falls out of a bag in a gym locker-room, where it ends up in the gormless clutches of gym employees Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt) and Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand); their instant reaction is to try a little blackmail. The cosmetic surgery-obsessed Litzke is also scouring internet dating sites and starts something with serial adulterer Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), who has an unspecified job in the Treasury dept. But he is already having an affair with Cox's wife Katie (Tilda Swinton)... ?

The Coens, and their starry cast, are clearly having tremendous fun with this frivolous comedy, and it's infectious – the laughs come thick and fast – but the knowing, blackly comic edge of so many of their films, from Fargo to The Big Lebowski, is still very much in evidence.

A seemingly normal detention in a seemingly normal modern day comprehensive. The valiant teacher battles on with biology revision. She believes only education will set her pupils free. For outside the world is in the middle of a long and bloody war.

Despite all her best efforts, all too soon the tide of conflict is lapping at the school gates and one by one pupils and teacher are pulled under, as their hopes and dreams float away from them.

But as she has taught them in her biology lesson, like the cockroach, the fittest will survive. She is no longer sure however if tenderness and humanity stand a chance?

Sam Holcroft's Cockroach is directed by Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland. It is the first production in the Traverse/National Theatre of Scotland's Debuts, a short season of exciting new plays by first time writers.

Notes:,

A chain reaction. You tell one painful truth and it leads to two more.

This intense, absorbing and powerful piece of theatre from Michael Frayn brings our 2008/09 Season to a pulsating end. Copenhagen is a gripping drama in which the mysterious actions of German physicist Werner Heisenberg in 1941 are pored over and questioned intensely. Frayn's piece is a fictional exploration of Heisenberg's real-life meeting with his old friend and mentor Nils Bohr, and the huge significance it may have held for the entire world. Years after the event, their ghosts debate the true meaning of the encounter, and try to understand exactly what happened that night.

This ill-fated meeting splintered their friendship, and provoked decades of speculation and debate. Having laid down the guiding principles of quantum physics in the 1920s, the two now found themselves on opposite sides of the Second World War.

Led by Heisenberg, German science rushed to develop a nuclear capability - both to generate power and to create a bomb. But were Heisenberg's motives so clear cut? Did he really want to put the atom bomb in Hitler's grasp? And if so, why did he come to Copenhagen and consult so freely with his half-Jewish teacher and colleague?

There emerges a fascinating portrait of the lives and work of these two men. Driven to explore the boundaries of science, they were also placed by history in a time when their work could and would cause unthinkable suffering and horror. With Bohr's perceptive wife Margrethe alongside them, the two scientists try to decipher what Heisenberg hoped to achieve, and the full implications of their meeting in Copenhagen.

 ,  Edinburgh Festival Theatre,  0131 529 6000,  Sunday 21 June 2009,  04:00 p.m.,  02:45 p.m., <./p>

Notes:,

By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart;
Sung in Italian, with English supertitles.

Set in the Bay of Naples in the 18th century, Così fan tutte is an amusing story of pretence, seduction, disguises, flirtatious alliances and the 'fickle' nature of the female sex. This traditionally delivered story beautifully captures the Mediterranean setting with sun-washed imagery and stunning costumes, and features a score full of impeccable richness and variety.

Ferrando and Guglielmo are two officers engaged to Fiordiligi and Dorabella. Whilst in a coffee shop, the men state that their soon-to-be brides will always be faithful to them but a friend lays a bet with them claiming he can prove otherwise. An hilarious plan is concocted to test the true feelings of the betrothed.

Tobias Ringborg, Joel Prieto and Ville Rusanen make their UK opera débuts.

Curse of the Starving Class,  Sam Shepard satire,  Royal Lyceum Company, <./p>

 ,  Edinburgh Royal Lyceum,  0131 248 4848,  Saturday 4 April 2009,  02:30 p.m.,  12:30 p.m., <./p>

Notes:,

I'm going into crime. It's the only thing that pays these days.

Sam Shepard presents a comic dissection of the corruption of American values. On a run-down Californian farmstead, at the edge of the desert and within migrating distance of the Mexican border, an alcoholic husband and a philandering wife are each scheming to sell off their family home without the other's knowledge, whilst their children struggle to come to terms with the harsh reality of the world they've been born into. Debt, stolen dreams and a fear of the future fuel the family's self-destructive behaviours, as they sacrifice their meagre values, and each other, to attain something of the better life they envision for themselves.

Behind Shepard's exploration of the corrupting power of money and the all-consuming lure of corporation is a wickedly funny portrait of a family in decline, unsure whether to reject or embrace the label of America's 'starving class' whilst teetering on the edge of poverty, sanity and society itself.

Shepard's work explores many similar themes to playwrights such as Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill, but through more contemporary eyes, and with a brash, raw energy. The drama is underpinned by a scathing sense of humour, ensuring these characters never become simple archetypes, but are instead living, breathing contradictions of themselves, deranged and uncivilised, hysterical in the face of tragedy, and doomed despite their best efforts to survive the world.

Bertram Pincus is an up-tight, foul-tempered and lonely dentist who hates his colleagues, hates his patients and hates the people in his apartment block. That is until he goes in for a routine operation and dies for seven minutes. When he leaves the hospital, he has gained the ability to see dead people – not all dead people, just the ones who have unfinished business on this earth, where their untimely deaths may have left family members confused or loved-ones upset. Initially reluctant to help out these earth-bound spectres, Pincus is gradually railroaded into helping recently deceased business man, Frank stop his wife from marrying a pompous idiot.

 ,  Edinburgh Kings Theatre,  0131 529 6000,  Saturday 21 March 2009,  07:30 p.m.,   , <./p>

Notes:,

H.M.S. Pinafore was one of the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas when first presented. It is brought to the King's by the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in conjunction with another much-loved work, Patience. In H.M.S. Pinafore, share the excitement of the sailors as they welcome Sir Joseph Porter and his 'sisters, cousins and aunts' aboard ship. The satire of G&S never fades - and the melodies are simply glorious.

 ,  Glasgow Theatre Royal,  0870 060 6647,  Thursday 12 February 2009,  07:15 p.m.,  06:00 p.m., <./p>

Notes:,

Sung in Italian with English Supertitles.

New co-production with Welsh National Opera.

Where do the gentlemen of 19th century Paris go once their wives have gone to bed? Scottish Director David McVicar and Tanya McCallin, the creative team behind Scottish Opera's Der Rosenkavalier, bring you this authentic take on one of the world's most famous operas. Bohemian artists, showgirls, courtesans ... the rich and the wretched mix together within the shady underworld of the Parisian demi-monde.

La traviata is the impassioned story of Violetta Valéry, a famous courtesan who falls in love with Alfredo Germont, much to the distress of his father. Alfredo's father convinces Violetta that she must leave his son in order to avoid bringing scandal to the family name, forcing her to concoct a series of heart-breaking lies to forestall her lover. Once Alfredo discovers the truth of her selfless sacrifice, he rushes again to her side but it is too late - Violetta is dying of consumption.

This is the intimate story of a fallen woman, a tragic heroine and true unadulterated love. The setting perfectly encompasses the power and devastation of this passionate encounter in what is sure to be a deeply moving and immensely powerful production.

Carmen Giannattasio makes her Scottish Opera début playing the lead role of Violetta, Federico Lepre sings Alfredo, and Richard Zeller returns to Scottish Opera as Giorgio Germont. We are delighted to welcome back French conductor Emmanuel Joel-Hornak.

Notes:,

Sung in French with English Supertitles;
A Scottish Opera première and a new production.

First performed in 1884 at the Opéra Comique in Paris, this 19th century tragedy is Massenet's most famous opera and is a passionate and compelling account of one woman's turbulent life.

Manon, a beautiful young girl, is travelling to a convent. En route she stops at an inn where she makes the acquaintance of Chevalier des Grieux. The couple fall in love and elope to Paris but are soon tracked down by her cousin and his friend, the nobleman de Brétigny. Seeking to procure Manon's affections for himself, de Brétigny persuades her to leave des Grieux with promises of wealth and luxury. Later, having realised that she cannot be without her former lover, Manon seeks him out and they are re-united. However, de Brétigny ensures that there will be no happy ending and takes his revenge with devastating consequences.

This large-scale production is a Scottish Opera première and includes fully choreographed ballet scenes and an impressive chorus adding maximum dramatic impact to Massenet's moving score.

Anne Sophie Duprels makes her Scottish Opera début playing the part of Manon and Scottish Opera welcomes back internationally acclaimed tenor Paul Charles Clarke. Scottish Opera Music Director Francesco Corti conducts.

Notes:,

Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M interrogate Mr White who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.

Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille, a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene, a ruthless businessman and major force within the mysterious organisation.

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world's most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano. Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, thereby giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop his organisation.

Notes:,

Daniel Craig is back as James Bond in Quantum of Solace. Bond has made his latest mission personal after the love of his life, Vesper, betrayed him for a secret organisation that he and M now need to investigate.

Bond's investigation takes him to Austria, Italy and South America, where he discovers that an important player in the secret organisation is planning to give control of South America to associates within the CIA and the British Government.

Quantum of Solace introduces the beautiful but feisty Camille, a woman with her own vendetta, who leads Bond straight to this organisation.

Quantum of Solace shows the dark side of Bond in his quest to find out more about this organisation and why the woman he loved betrayed him.

Quantum of Solace promises to provide action, adventure and cutting drama, taking the Bond genre to further heights.

Notes:,

The sinister plans of Jigsaw continue in this next sequel of the Saw movies, with even bigger traps, such as the glass box trap, (which was originally planned to be used in Saw IV, but explored more in Saw V) and life and death situations, all of which we have come to suspect from the Saw films. Saw V hopes to put the misery out of anxious movie lovers, as it explains what happened to Corbett, the daughter of Lynn Denlon and Jeff Reinhart, following the conclusion of Saw III that left her in danger. While Billy the puppet and the red tricycle are further explained. Detective Hoffman also appears, continuing on from Saw IV, he is seemingly the last person alive to carry on the Jigsaw legacy, but when his secret is under threat, he must go on the hunt to eliminate all the loose ends.

 ,  Glasgow Tramway Theatre,  0845 330 3501,  Friday 31 October 2008,  07:00 p.m.,   , <./p>

Notes:,

One strange and wild autumn, a little while ago, Hallowe'en came early.

It came at exactly the same time as Cooger and Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show rolled into town. That year, James Nightshade of 97 Oak Street was thirteen years, eleven months, twenty-three days old. Next door, William Halloway was thirteen years, eleven months, twenty-four days old. Both almost fourteen. Almost, but not quite.

For Jim and Will, the lure of the funfair is irresistible. They soon discover that a sinister secret lies behind the smoke and mirrors and the carnival holds a dark desire to destroy the whole town. Only Jim, Will and Will's mild-mannered dad can save the day.

Adapting his own novel for the stage, the legendary Ray Bradbury has created a spine-tingling battle between good and evil, packed with a terrifying collection of characters including the mysterious flying Dust Witch and the deadly Mr. Dark. A fantastic book and now a new show for everyone from nine and up, Something Wicked This Way Comes is a deliciously scary adventure about friendship and innocence and perfectly captures the wondrous belief we possess when we are fourteen.

The Caretaker,  Harold Pinter,  Citizens, <./p>

 ,  Glasgow Citizens Theatre,  0141 429 0022,  Thursday 6 November 2008,  07:30 p.m.,   , <./p>

Notes:,

London, 1959.
Aston (a quiet reserved man) has helped an old tramp to escape from a café brawl and brought him back to his scruffy one-room flat. Mick (his taunting younger brother) isn't too happy about his older brother's act of kindness. As the old man struggles where to place his trust, he is made Caretaker of the assorted junk and despite his obsessional fears of draughts, gas leaks and ill-fitting shoes, strives to secure his new position - by playing off one troubled brother against the other.

Harold Pinter's The Caretaker brought him his first major artistic and commercial success, and has been adapted for television and film. With a masterful use of dialogue, this is a brutally funny play that endures today as a modern classic.

Directed by Philip Breen whose previous work at the Citizens' includes the acclaimed Shadow Of A Gunman and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.

 ,  Edinburgh Traverse Theatre,  0131 228 1404,  Saturday 15 November 2008,  02:30 p.m.,  01:45 p.m., <./p>

Notes:,

The second production in the Traverse/National Theatre of Scotland's Debuts is a double bill of two shorts plays that look into the darker side of Scottish families.

In Kenny Lindsay's The Dogstone, a father and son aren't seeing eye to eye in Oban. Teenager Lorn is trying to get his life started as his Dad is throwing his away with last night's empties. He's a 'heroic drinker' who loves to tell Lorn the local legends and stories of warriors, kings and the Dogstone. Just how far can his fantasies take him?

Andy Duffy's Nasty, Brutish and Short finds two brothers, Jim and Luke, holed up in a Glasgow flat. No job, no money and it looks like the only things on offer are all bad. As the options start to run out, Jim takes what isn't his and sets the two brothers on a collision course ...

Andy Duffy's Nasty, Brutish and Short and Kenny Lindsay's The Dogstone are directed by Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Traverse. It is the second production in the Traverse/National Theatre of Scotland's Debuts, a short season of exciting new plays by first time writers.
